Just killing a little time making digital scrapbook pages from last years photos.

HERE is a link to Half the skys video.

Changing children’s lives does not require new facilities or expensive playthings or complicated new procedures. Human contact is the most important ingredient, and caretakers can make a huge difference—just by taking an extra moment whenever possible to hold the babies, talk to the children, hug them all, and assure them that someone cares.

I took this picture of Juergen with Philip (adopted from Thailand in 2001) last night. Our oldest daughter Jessica, who is autistic once wrote " My dad is a super man, and a wonder of nature". Juergen is a super hero! It is a well known fact that all good dads are super hero's!

Update- I won the bid!!!

I just bid on a stroller on e-bay. It is by Hauck, and it was the model of the year 2006. It's called the Jeep! I know allot of people buy strollers in China. Generally I think a 4 year old should walk, and not even use a stroller, but we want to do allot of walking. I think we would be more flexible if we had a stroller. I have also read that allot of people don't even bother using their strollers because the sidewalks are so uneven. This is why I thought if I want a stroller, I had better bring a very good stroller, that can handle the "off road " conditions!

It is late here in Germany and I need to go to bed. I just saw our TA wait counter move to 2 months! I am feeling really happy! The time is flying by. We are getting ready to go. We have not had much of a winter here in Europe. We actually have crocuses and daffodils’ starting to come up. I am still expecting to be hit with winter. I feel like the winter of my wait is almost over! The season is about to change! I am sure Sarah will be home in a matter of 6 to 8 weeks! I am so happy that our wait is almost over…and happy to see my beautiful daughter.

" See! The winter is past;
the rains are over and gone.
Flowers appear on the earth;
the season of singing has come,
the cooing of doves
is heard in our land. "

Very encouraging news...
Some of the first families who sent back their SC (Seeking Confirmation) forms only a week ago are now receiving their TA's(travel approval). We were thinking it would take 3 weeks or more to get TA's after these forms were sent in. We don't know yet what will be the average or normal time, but one week is very unexpected and fast!
Pregnant women from mainland China who are near their due date will be turned away at Hong Kong borders if they cannot prove they have appointments in the city's hospitals, officials said Tuesday.

The number of births by mainland Chinese women in Hong Kong nearly doubled in 2005 -- from 10,128 in 2003 to 19,538 -- according to the city's Hospital Authority. Many come to evade China's one-child policy, take advantage of higher quality health care or earn Hong Kong residency rights for their babies.

The former British colony of Hong Kong is now under Chinese rule, but it remains separately governed and maintains immigration controls. Hong Kong residency, which is required to live in the city, is coveted by mainland Chinese because of the higher standard of living here and prospect of a better education for their children.

Starting in February, mainland Chinese women who are more than seven months pregnant cannot enter Hong Kong if they cannot prove that a Hong Kong hospital has confirmed arrangements for their admission, said Patrick Nip, deputy secretary for the Health, Welfare and Food department.

Many mainland women currently do not make bookings or provide prenatal records to Hong Kong hospitals, choosing instead to rush to emergency wards at the last minute to give birth. Some leave behind large hospital debts when they return to China.

As part of the new rules, mainland Chinese mothers will have to pay double the normal fee to give birth in Hong Kong hospitals. Medical staff stationed at border control points will help officials step up checks on women who appear far along in their pregnancies, an immigration official said.
I just added a long list of adoption grants and loans (on the side bar). If you need money to adopt, here is a good place to start.

Managers of China's vast Forbidden City palace are deciding whether to close a Starbucks outlet on its grounds after protests led by a state TV personality, a news report said Thursday.
The decision will be made as part of a palace renovation that already has seen one-third of its shops removed.
Whether or not Starbucks remains depends on the entire design plan that will be released in the first half of the year.
A news anchor for Chinese state television has led an online campaign to remove Starbucks from the vermilion-walled palace, arguing that it tarnishes traditional Chinese culture.
The anchorman, Rui Chenggang, wrote a blog for the broadcaster that Starbucks' presence "undermined the Forbidden City's solemnity and trampled over Chinese culture."
Starbucks opened its Forbidden City outlet in 2000 at the invitation of palace managers, who are under pressure to raise money to help maintain the vast, vermilion-walled complex.

Here is an update on Kailee Wells. She was adopted as a baby from China. She almost bled to death 5 years ago when her family found out she had Severe Aplastic Anemia . She has had a number of transplants, and for awhile it looked like she would be OK. But she is not OK, and her last chance for life is another transplant on Feb 3. Please pray for Kailee and her amazing parents. She is a beautiful, and courageous girl
and I hope by Gods grace she lives a very long and healthy life!!!
I just got good news. One of the families I have contact with just got their SC form (Seeking Confirmation)today. They have a daughter in Sarah's children's home, and they are using the same adoption agency (IAAP). They have the sweetest, cutest little girl! I actually begged Juergen to try to adopt her too(sometimes China lets you adopt two kids from the same children's home at once). He said "no"! It is a good thing because she got a great family. They are only a few weeks ahead of us in the process, so I guess our day will come soon! I hope we at least get that SC form by Chinese New Year, then we can probably travel by Easter vacation , April 2-14.

Here are a list of articles written to waiting adoptive parents.

I was listening to Joyce Meyer speak this morning. She told a story about a teacup. A teacup begins like a lump of clay. It is pounded, molded and shaped (a painful process). When it finally takes shape, it needs to sit and dry out (waiting), then the master potter paints glaze on it and sticks it in a hot oven for a first firing, once out of this fire it is placed on a shelf to wait some more (more waiting), finally another very thick and stinky glaze is painted on the cup and it is placed in an even hotter oven for a final fire. The result is a beautiful teacup…but the process was not pleasant. I am going to buy a special teacup in China to remind me of this process that brought me to my daughter! It was stinky, hot, and pounding…but I am confident the results will be a beautiful work of art!

I am preparing to send another care package to Sarah. I have two new collages of photos of our family. Juergen made large prints, and I covered them with lamination paper, so she can handle them. I bought her an electronic book that has 6 different German children's songs. I am including extra batteries. I hope they let her have the book.It might help her get a bit use to this strange new language...the sound of it. I am sending 200 balloons, and allot of candy for all the kids. I am also packing some good chocolate for the nannies and other workers.
There are new out breaks of the bird flu in many Asian countries. I am praying they manage to control the spread of the disease. China promised to close its borders if there is an outbreak there. This could be a night mare for all waiting adoptive families. Oh God, we really do live in your mercy and grace! Protect our children and lead them quickly home to us! Amen!!!
A retired Chinese couple have advertised for a "daughter" to look after them in place of their son who has emigrated to Canada -- and more than 100 candidates signed up to try their luck, a newspaper said on Tuesday.

Tian Zhendong and Ding Shuhui, a former construction expert and a university professor from central Wuhan, felt "lonely and lost" after their only son moved to Canada with his wife, even though he called home every week, the Guangzhou Daily said.

But he didn't want to come back to China.

"I regret letting him leave," the newspaper quoted mother Ding as saying.

The couple used to visit their son in Canada, but they could not get used to life there, it said.

After six years of loneliness, the couple decided to seek a daughter to be with them and look after them, who would be given an apartment if she passed the trial period of three years.

"We are not looking for a maid, but someone to be with us until we are dead," father Tian was quoted as saying.

The "fierce competition" was entering its final stage as the couple were expected to choose the final winner from the last five candidates soon, the newspaper said.

I can not watch this program in Germany. I may buy it on DVD someday. I thought some of you might be interested in seeing this PBS program called China from the inside!

These are the beautiful eyes of a 1 year old boy named XiaoCao. He is in the same children's home as Sarah, Nanjing SWI. He has a skin condition called nevus . This is both large and small moles on his face and body. He is listed with IAAP, and his agency fees have been waved. The remainder of his adoption fees could be covered by a grant to qualified families. His moles have not changed over the year. Many of these moles could be removed. If you are thinking about adopting a child from China, and money is an issue...XiaoCao might be the child for you. XiaoCao has been well-loved by the nannies, and it shows in his easy going attitude and interest in everything around him. His development is very good! If you can see past his moles, and see the beautiful kid that just needs a family!
Yesterday I was pretty sad (understatement). The new SC rule hit me pretty hard! A few posts ago I wrote that I felt like a snow ball rolling down a long hill gathering momentum. Well, the snow ball hit the Great Wall of China...and the wall won! Juergen has big shoulders...and I ended up crying. I figure it is OK to cry when you have missed yet another month of your child's life. I will not be there for her 4TH birthday, and I have missed her whole 3RD year! But don't worry; I am not planning on parking the car here! We will send Sarah a new care package. We will send her new photos of her room, and the family. It is all I can do! Today I will stand up again and keep moving forwards. We are going to finish our trip to China. Sarah is waiting for us.

Thursday, January 11, 2007

OK, if I don't laugh I am going to cry! Please feel free to send me your best jokes or funny video links (please make them clean). I just had a month added to my adoption process today (imagine telling a women who is 8 1/2 months pregnant she has to wait an extra month or two)...I need to be cheered up!

OK, first I need to apologize to my agency for getting mad about not telling me about the new requirements. It seems they were just as "in the dark" as everyone else. China just started sending the forms out this week! I guess they did not warn anyone! My kids have a two week vacation April 2-14. Maybe I should just set my mind on going then. I realize I won't be able to find a hotel room in Guangzhou, but Hong Kong is only 2 hours away by train. I would rather spend a week with my family in Hong Kong anyway, and just take the train to Guangzhou to do paperwork! What is the difference between panic attack and sadness? For a hour or so I began to panic, but now I know I am just really sad this is taking so long. I started this process with so many families who are already home enjoying their new children. I know I will get there too...I am feeling kicked again. It is OK, I am a big girl. I will get up. But darn it...it hurts to be kicked again!

I need more then chocolate, I am going to need some prayer! I am reading about a new requirement added to the adoption process. It is called a SC form (Seeking Confirmation). I have not heard about this from my own agency, but read about it on the adoption web groups. I am pretty sure It will add an extra 2-3 weeks to our process.I guess China sends this letter or form to our agency seeking to confirm we still want our child (please)! We have to fill the form out, and notarize it, fed-ex it to the USA, they fed-ex it to China...and we wait again! OK, April in China? But wait...there are the trade shows in Guangzhou and know one travels in April!

Wednesday, January 10, 2007

Ok, this is what desperate moms do besides watching the grass grow (and trust me it does not grow fast in the winter time)! Today we are on day 51 of our TA wait, in one week (Jan 17TH) we will be on day 58, one week more (Jan 24TH) it will be day 65, one week more (Jan 31) is day 72(getting exciting) a week more (Feb 7) is day 79...Feb 7TH is also Sarah's 4TH birthday, one week more is Feb 14TH and also the last week before Chinese New Years shuts everything down it is day 86 of our TA wait, one week more and it's day 93 on Feb 21, one more week is Feb 28th and day number 100. I would love that TA to come by Sarah’s birthday (Feb 7TH). Even if we can not travel before the Chinese New Years (and I am trying to prepare myself for this because that is how it looks right now), I would love to at least have everything set up to go right after the New Years shut down. Maybe I will make a TA calendar, sort of like an advent calendar. I will put a dollar (Euro) into a jar for each day I wait out this TA.Then I will buy myself a gift to celebrate when it finally comes! Today I have 51 Euros.......Maybe I had better give myself 2 Euros a day?

I just told Nicole(my 13 year old daughter) I needed to get off the computer..."a watched pot never boils"! She is a big Farside fan, and she told me about this Farside take off of that saying. It made me laugh out loud, and I made her find it for you to read! I am afraid I just want to camp out by my computer day and night...just hoping for some news from China. I probably need to wait for another month for a TA, but some people get them early (around 45 days). We are at day 51...so I figure it could come any time. Most likely in a month...but I am hoping for sooner!

So far today I have no news, and no new pictures. I do know our package to Sarah was delivered, and we may get new photos from the director. A few waiting families on our Nanjing group already got new photos this week! In the mean time, I am playing with digital scrap book templates. Here is a picture I made with some of the pictures I have of Sarah. I buy my digital scrapbook templates at SCRAPBOOK-BYTES.

Here is an article on China's Sweeping Policy Changes. It will affect many people. The biggest change being no single people can adopt.

I was driving my 15 year old daughter towards the old town of Heidelberg. We like to walk in the city and window shop. I had an overwhelming feeling of joy hit me like a wave! I am beginning to really feel like we are on the last leg of our adoption wait. I feel like a small snow ball that has just begun it's race down a very long hill! I can not explain it...but some how the thought of finally traveling has taken hold of me. This wonderful thought is gathering momentum. I am not a runner who will crawl exhausted to the finish line (at least I hope not). I want to race ahead...I am ready to finish this race! Our day is coming, I can feel it in my spirit!

OK, I don't have new photos of Sarah to share, so I took pictures of some of the toys she has waiting for her! She has Dora who speaks both English and German. The doll high chair has butterflies on it just for our little butterfly! I was in a second hand shop and found this beautiful baby bassinet. It is solid oak. I figured Sarah could lay her dolls in it, and one day my grandchildren can sleep in it! I also got her a wooden pirate ship. She will have allot of fun with her older brothers. She has of course already stolen my heart!
Hi, I have good news and bad news. The good news is my online friend Hedda got her beautiful daughter Maddie. The first 24 hours were a little ruff. Maddie was sad, and afraid. It is such a big thing to take a child away from all that she knows! She is now doing better. She is smiling and even laughing. The bad news is they won't be allowed to visit the SWI(social welfare institute). Sometimes they let families visit, other times they don't. I am pretty sure they will find a way to pass Sarah's princess dress on to her. I am sorry she won't also be receiving a hug from me! I may or may not get photos from the director. This is disappointing...but I already have many more photos then most people get! It really is OK!
We are trying to come up with a travel plan for when we travel. We are still thinking of taking all the kids. There is a direct flight (over night) from Frankfurt to Shanghai. An over night direct flight is the only way to fly with our autistic daughter Jessica. We think we may go to Shanghai for 5 days or so and stay at a full service apartment. We would basically get over the jet lag, and do some early shopping and sight seeing (who knows what we can do once we get Sarah). Then we would take the train to Nanjing (only two hours away). We would get Sarah, and finalize the adoption.
Then Juergen would take all but Sarah back to Germany, and I would stay and finish the American part of the adoption(this includes traveling to Guangzhou in the South of China, and a trip to the USA). My mom wants to come to China with us, so I will not be alone! We need to figure out when she can meet us. Anyway, the ideas are flying, we are dreaming, and I guess at some point we will finalize our plans! Sorry again for not getting new pictures. Somethings are out of my control...but you know I will keep trying!

Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.

I've always loved this song. I use to (try) to sing it just like Judy Garland in the wizard of Oz. Adopting Sarah is a dream to me, but someday over the rainbow, that dream really will come true! It seems so long and far away...but I know it will happen! I tried to find a good copy of Judy singing this song...but you'll have to settle for Barbra Streisand.

How to raise a compassionate child

Reject rudeness, Say "I'm sorry", Enforce rules, Provide structure, Expect her to help, and Outlaw name-calling!

We finally got our official Log In Date (LID) and it took awhile to log us in! We are not as far along as I would have hoped! I guess we need to wait until March or April to travel! I guess I will get sad about this, but for right now I am just happy to actually have a real date! I guess China will be prettier to see in the spring time! I am trusting God does have a plan! For today, I am excited to be reading the blog of my friend Hedda. She received her beautiful daughter Maddie today. Maddie might be Sarah's "best" friend. We always see them together in many photos. Today I am happy Maddie has her family. I think it's realistic to be thinking we will travel in March. If we are blessed to go any earlier, well I would be pleasantly surprised! OK,pray for me,I am going to go cry over the lateness of our TA! I am pretty sure I will have peace after a good cry and maybe some chocolate ice cream!

PS. do not kick me...I am honestly sad, but I know this is not the end of the world!
NTDTV - Chinese New Year Spectacular Highlights

Monday, January 01, 2007

I just read one person traveling with a toddler on the flight from China took play-doh on the plane, and a thing called Table toppers. These are place mats that are disposable and stick in place. This sounded like a good tip! As you can guess, I am starting to pack for our long trip. I not only travel to China, but also to the USA to get Sarah's American passport. I think we are going to apply for our Chinese visas this week. We have to go to the Chinese embassy in Frankfurt to do this. The visas are only good for 3 months, but I am pretty sure that will be OK. I am going to pack the stuff for Sarah, and the gifts for the orphanage...and make a list for everything else. I welcome your ideas. It will be a very long trip!

Writing in Chinese!

Sunday, December 31, 2006

Sorry :( I just read the blog of the traveling family I had hoped would get new pictures of Sarah. They were only allowed to visit the 1 year olds in Nanjing, so no new photos this time! That is just how it goes!!! My friend Hedda just left yesterday for China. She gets her beautiful daughter Maddie next week! She took a gift for Sarah, and I'm pretty sure I will get both pictures and a personal report from her. Maddie and Sarah have been in many pictures together. I think they might be good friends (maybe best friends). It is very special for me to be in contact with this family! Stay tune for more...It's midnight in China! Happy New Year!!!
I just saw this concert today on TV. Here is James Taylor singing "You've got a friend". A great song to start the new year! Soon(God willing) our Sarah will have a family of friends...and we will be there winter ,spring ,summer and fall...always!

panda cupcakes

when it's your favorite panda's birthday or you want to make any occasion more festive, the obvious choice is to make panda cupcakes! Here is how they are made! How cute!!! I look forward to Sarah's first birthday party!

Happy New Years!!!
Hi, I just read that the Chinese Internet connections have been down for the past 3 days because of an earth quake off the coast of Taiwan. This is why we don't have new photos of Sarah! I just read the blog of one of the traveling families. They are doing great, but have allot of trouble sending mail over the Internet! I am so glad to hear they are doing good. When people are super stressed, they usually don't write on their blogs...it kind of makes you nervous that things are not working out. In this case it was an earth quake blocking communications. We sure have gotten spoiled by technology!

The discovery of fireworks or namely the formulation of gunpowder is believed to have occurred by chance approximately 2,000 years ago in China.
It is thought that a Chinese cook accidentally mixed three common kitchen ingredients:
These were heated over a fire and dried to give a black flaky powder which burned with a loud bang when ignited. This crude, early mixture has come to be known in our modern world today as gun powder.
The Chinese named this fascinating black powder "huo yao" ("Fire Chemical") and developed it further. The mixture was inserted into the hollow of a bamboo stick and when thrown into a fire, the gases produced by the ignited burning powder inside caused an immense build up of pressure and blasted the tube apart. The basic fire cracker was born.
Thereafter, fire crackers played an essential part to Chinese festivities -weddings, religious rituals -any cause for celebration heard their bang due to the belief that they were thought to be powerful enough to scare off evil spirits.
It was inevitable that the time would come when people would begin to realize that these now powerful explosives could be applied to warfare. The Chinese were well aware of the killing power these explosives had and within 100 years had not only developed fire arrows (bamboo fire crackers attached to regular arrows and shot at the enemy) but even 'Ground Rats'. These consisted of propelling rats from inside the bamboo fire crackers and toward the enemy, creating a great psychological effect -scaring soldiers and causing horses to go wild.

Sorry, but I still did not get new pictures of Sarah. The traveling families must have their hands full with their new kids...maybe they will find the time to post the orphanage pictures later? I think Sarah is a bit of a fire cracker by personality! I bet she will light up our New Year!!!

HERE is a very interesting post called " The Myth of the Mourning Birth mother". Maybe birth parents in China don't feel the loss of their child the same way we would. Maybe they simply do what they feel they must do, and move on with their lives, forgetting the child they lost! Even the grief and loss we feel in the West is a luxury many people in this world can not afford! We can never know for sure how they feel...each birth parent is different. This is however a very interesting article.

It is late in China, and we did not get new pictures today. Maybe tomorrow? Here are some of Sarah's pictures so far. I hope to add to this collection soon!

Hi, I am still expecting new pictures of Sarah soon. Please keep checking back. Maybe today! Anyway, I read about this one women who is making quilts to raise money for their 2ND Chinese adoption. There is a tradition in the northern part of China to make a Bai Jia Bei, or 100 Good Wishes Quilt. When a child is born, friends and family are invited to contribute a scrap of old clothing along with a special wish which is to be made into a quilt by the child's mother. It is said that the luck and energy of the people who wore these clothes surrounds the child when she is wrapped in the quilt. The quilt contains the luck, energy, and good wishes from all the families and friends who contributed a piece of fabric. The quilt is then passed down from generation to generation. My mom has already made a quilt for Sarah. I have not seen the quilt yet (Mom is in the USA, and I am in Germany). It is my surprise! If you don't sew (and I don't sew), and don't have a Mom that sews, maybe you might want to look at buying a quilt and at the same time helping to support this adoption! The web site is HERE.I guess a quilt made by someone else won't have the same kind of "luck energy" as a self made quilt, but it will bless the family selling the quilts, and help bring a child home from China (that has to be worth something)!

China to stay with one-child rule

BEIJING, China (AP) -- China has no plans to change its one-child policy, Premier Wen Jiabao said, adding family planning was critical to China's modernization plans.

The official Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday quoted Wen as saying the "government will adhere to the basic policy of family planning with improved services and stronger leadership."

He added that family planning was crucial to China's modernization and the building of a "harmonious society," a catchphrase meant to mean a more equal distribution of riches in a country with a growing wealth gap.

Hi, I hope you all had a nice Christmas! We are still enjoying our vacation. Juergen gets two weeks of vacation. We did nothing but eat, sleep, and play for the past few days. Now our minds are turning towards "the list" of stuff we want to take care of around the house. Juergen is putting a net under the open stairway in our 3 story house. We hope Sarah will be smart enough not to try to slip through the stairs, but we don't want to take any chances. Our oldest daughter Jessica almost fell through the stair railing when she was smaller. This was in another house, and we put a net up for her too. Sarah is just a little thing...and we just don't know how careful she will be! 3 floors is a long way to fall! Anyway, it will keep her from dropping her toys down the stairs. I may get new pictures of Sarah tomorrow! I thought I did not care about new pictures (you know, all I want is the real thing). Actually, I am excited about new pictures! Our papers went to China two months ago, so we also hope to get our TA (travel approval)in the next two to four weeks! My heart is full of joy and expectation!

Merry Christmas! I read this awesome quote on one of my Yahoo groups. It is about trust...
When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don't throw
away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer.

A Christmas Story - Chinese Dinner

Friday, December 22, 2006

If I had it my way, I would be stuck in the fog at London Heathrow airport! I looked back at some of my old posts. I had hoped to travel now to China, by British Air from London to Shanghai. Flights are being canceled right and left. If I had it my way, I would be stuck in London with my autistic daughter Jessica. I do not know how things will work out, but today I can thank God I am not stuck in London! I pray all of you who are traveling someplace for Christmas have a very safe trip! We are warm and safe at home...recovering from the flu. Everything is ready for Christmas. I need to buy food because all the stores close for 3 days(imagine stores closing in the USA for 3 whole days). Juergen still has to buy me a gift...but that is pretty much his annual tradition, shopping 3 hours before the stores close! This year he agreed to adopt Sarah, and he is taking me to China, so I don't expect any great gifts...he is way off the hook!!!

2006 has almost gone. It's been a great year! I will write a short year in review letter on our family blog if you care to take a look. Today I just wanted to take the time to thank you all for being here with me, and supporting us with your comments, and prayers. 2007 should be very exciting as we finally are able to go to China and pick up Sarah. I have been so blessed to meet some really great people in this process. There are the most amazing people "called" to love and care for fatherless children. I believe most of us have discovered a secret...we win when we adopt. The kids gain so much from us, but somehow we gain more! Part of what I have gained is the acquaintance of amazing people like you! I wish you a warm and blessed Christmas...and all that is good in 2007!

Wednesday, December 20, 2006

I just found this picture of Sarah in her group in Nanjing. I think it must be about 9 months to one year old. She has not changed much. I should get new pictures some time next week, and the week after that. There are 3 families from the Nanjing Yahoo group traveling to pick up their beautiful kids! Two families actually receive their children on Christmas day! Now that is a gift!!! I know our TA is only 2-4 weeks away. I am excited that our day will come too! I actually have the flu. I got it from my daughters. I feel awful! My wonderful husband took the day off to take care of everyone. I am one blessed wife! I love my kids very much, but my love for Juergen is in a way other dimension! Apart from my love for Jesus, Juergen is the greatest gift God has or ever could give me! OK, I am going to stop...I am probably making you sick!

Tuesday, December 19, 2006

Shui Qing is Sarah's Chinese name. It means clean or pure water. She was found on a stone bench at a water purifying plant in Nanjing ,China on the day she was born. In a way I am surprised at how people respond when they hear she was abandoned. I guess it just seems so normal to me...I am so caught up in this world of orphan awareness, I forget other people just don't know how common it is for a child to be abandoned. There are around 100,000 children (mostly girls) abandoned in China every year. But it is not just China, it's India, Ethiopia, Russia, Brazil, and..and.. Thousands upon thousands of children left by generally well meaning parents who for unknown reasons felt they had no other choice. Philip and Thomas (our two sons adopted from Thailand) were also abandoned probably for medical reasons. Both boys had correctable but life threatening medical needs. Many people in Thailand have no health insurance, and would be charged for their children's treatment if they could get treatment. We believe the birth parents did what they could to save the boys lives. And Sarah's birth parents probably felt they had no choice but to leave her where she could be found, and pray she has a better future. I am so grateful to God I have a choice to pick them up...I only wish other people would also choose to do the same! Abandoned children do not choose to spend their lives with out a family...but we must choose if we would be a family to one of these!

per·spec·tive: The ability to perceive things in their actual interrelations or comparative importance: tried to keep my perspective throughout the crisis.

I read a post on one of my yahoo groups recently that seemed a bit over dramatic. The writer was a waiting mom who is understandably disappointed she will not be adopting her new child before Christmas. I am sure there are allot of us equally disappointed we won't be spending Christmas with our new children. It would have made the day very special! I am going to try very hard to make it special anyway! I keep reminding myself to keep my perspective! Sarah does not know what Christmas is, I am sure she won't be missing it! I am the big loser here! And my loss will be soon replaced with joy, our travel approval can not be too far away! I've heard some real sad and genuinely tragic news lately. Several people I know are going through some very real trouble! Sure I would have loved to have Sarah home for Christmas, but this seems like a small thing to me now...I don't want to bring you down with the tragic stories of others I've heard about this week! All I can say is it's given me a new perspective! If I start wining or complaining...please someone kick me!

Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday in China. This coming New Year begins February 18Th and goes for 15 days. It is at the same time as our kids Spring vacation (Carnival). This would be the next best time for us to travel to China, but government offices are closed in China. You can not process an adoption during this period. I really don't know how it''s going to work out. The kids are just going to need to miss some school! HERE is a good site for information on Chinese New Year. I am sure it would be very exciting to be in China during the New Year! Everything is decorated in red, lanterns everywhere, fireworks and dragon dances, special food, and happy people! I would not mind seeing China at New Years...it is just the HOW IS THIS GOING TO WORK question! I guess we will find out, and I hope soon!

Maddies mom said she would carry a gift to Sarah for me. I was thinking of sending Sarah a Bell princess dress. What do you think?
Well the TA's are starting to come in. Not for me (yet) but for one of Sarah's best buddies at the children's home in Nanjing! A major congratulations to Maddie and her very happy family who will be traveling to pick her up in a few short weeks! If it can not be us, I am sure glad it's them!!!

Here is Sarah singing Jingle Bells in Chinese! You have to see this...it's too cute! It is actually my daughter Nicole singing. She is studying Chinese every Saturday.
Hi, I just received an end of the year news letter from AAI (Adoption Advocates International). We used this wonderful agency to adopt Philip & Thomas. AAI has programs with China, and Thailand, but their strongest program is with Ethiopia. They place healthy children and babies, and also older sibling groups with families in the USA. They began placing HIV+ children, and I would like to quote their newsletter...

One of our special joys this year has been the increase in the placement of HIV+children. Just a couple of years ago no HIV+ children were being placed for adoption. With the medication now being provided to the children their condition is manageable and 4 children have joined their families this year and 10 more families are in the adoption process. We are especially pleased when adoptive parents are accepting of sibling groups for HIV+ children. One older boy was at Layla (this is AAI's home for healthy children) for over two years and beginning to fear he would never be adopted. He had a younger sister at AHOPE (AAI's home for HIV+ children). It was decided the two children should be placed together. When a family said they wanted to adopt two children who really needed a family we suggested these two and they are now together with their new family in Oregon.

Wow, it makes me want to cry! I wrote earlier I am reading the book There is no me without you. I can tell you honestly, it will be very hard for me not to at least try to convince Juergen to adopt from Ethiopia. First things first (that meaning Sarah). Maybe you should consider adopting from Ethiopia, or at least give to AAI's many good prodjects that help the children in Ethiopia. I also challange you to read the book There is no me without you. It will move you heart, it is an amazing book!

Some families from my agency who have been waiting a very long time received their TA's (travel approval) today. I didn't! I knew there was no realistic way it would happen, but I pray and I really hope! I guess that also leaves me open to some pretty strong disappointment! I think everyone loves the person who has faith and "wins", but what about those who have faith and do not see the evidence of their desire manifested? I think I need to go back and read Hebrews 11. It begins with these famous words... Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. and ends with these less known words... These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.
Something to think about. I guess the bottom line is not that I receive what I am hopping for (in my case a TA before the end of the year), but that I place my trust in God, and receive more of Him. Sarah would be an amazing Christmas gift...but Christmas is about Jesus. I already have Christ!

HERE is a photo show from Love without boundaries. It stars some of the beautiful Chinese children they were able to help in 2006. They have medical teams that do all sorts of surgery to help these kids. This saves their lives, gives them a better future, and in many cases makes the children more adoptable. If you have noticed on the side bar, you can buy books & other things through Amazon.com. If you click on Amazon from my website, 10% of what you spend will go to LWB to help the kids in China. You can also consider giving to them. You could help sponsor a surgery, help with nanny care in the children's homes, or help with their feeding programs!watch the photo show, and please consider helping this great work!

I saw this picture on CNN today. It was taken of aids orphans in Makeevka, eastern Ukraine. I was thinking about the orphan population in the world today. It use to be different. Children would lose their parents, and some would need to go to orphanages. Most orphans would find a home at grandmas house, or aunt or uncle so and so's House. The community could usually manage their own orphans. We would not need to consider adoption, unless we wanted children and could not have a child biologically. Aids has changed everything. The numbers are overwhelming. Communities no longer have the people to take the children in. Aunt and uncle so and so have also died of Aids.Where do you place an extra 2 or more million children a year? When will the people in the West wake up and stop acting like it is as it always has been! Aids has changed realty...we must be open to doing more for these children who are growing up with out even the basic needs of food, cloths, safety, and education! Your parents and mine did not live with the scale of need we are living with! We can try to keep up with the Status quo or we can rise to the challenge and do something!

Are some of you praying for us? I am feeling allot less stressed, and much more certain that it's going to work out perfectly! I don't know when we will travel to China,in two weeks or maybe two months? What I know is God has heard my concerns, He knows my heart, and it all rests safely in His hands. He will not forget me! In fact I am sure He has the details worked out beautifully! So today, even if my circumstances have not changed, I have changed! I've known this from the beginning with my mind, but now I am starting to believe it emotionally. I'm not as quick as some! Thank you for praying...and don't stop!

A Bible verse that stands out to me today...

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
2Corinthians 4:16-18

I've been so fixated on going to China before the end of the year. I've wanted to have Sarah before Christmas (my own hearts desire). I've checked the airline prices. Even if we got a TA, I'm not sure we could afford the tickets anymore. So many people love to travel at Christmas time. I do lose heart! It is easy to say "Amy, just trust God". It is much harder for me personally to get to this place where I can really let go, and not even look at the outward circumstances, really just putting these concerns I have in the hands of God. If I was traveling alone, it would,I believe be easier. But I want to travel with my whole family, so we have a long list of needs (including cheap tickets, hopefully a direct flight, and a airplain that has individual video screens playing Disney movies like "CARS"). Some of you are saying to yourselves, those are not needs, those are desires. Maybe the movie "CARS" is just a desire, but I do desire it because its Thomas's favorite movie, and I want the flight to be OK for all my kids. Traveling with Jessica(she is 15 years old and has autism) is hard enough. It is a Hugh blessing if the other 3 kids are well cared for so Juergen and I can care for Jessica. I am trying to get to this place of real trust. I can not say I am really there, but I am closer. Thomas had a real melt down the other day. I wanted to get the boys a Lego advent calendar. We went to toys are us to buy it. They were out of the calendar. While we were there, Thomas saw the Lego he wants for Christmas. He really fell apart when we left the store with out buying his Christmas present. Afterwards I had to talk to him about trusting us (remember this is only his 2ND Christmas, and it is overwhelmingly exciting). He wants it so badly, and he was afraid if He didn't get it now, it was not certain it would happen. I realize I am no different then Thomas. I want Sarah so badly, and God is telling me to trust him.

Shi shang zhi you ma ma hao
you ma de hai zi xiang ge bao.
tou jin ma ma de huai bao
xin fu xiang bu liao.
世上只有妈妈好
有妈的孩子像个宝
投进了妈妈的怀抱
幸福享不了
Mommy's the only dearest in the world
With a mom, you have the most valued treasure.
Jump into mom's heart
and you have endless happiness.
shi shang zhi you ma ma hao
mei ma de hai zi xiang ge cao
li kai ma ma de huai bao
xin fu na li zhao. 世上只有妈妈好
没妈的孩子像根草
离开妈妈的怀抱
幸福哪里找
Mommy's the only dearest in the world
without a mom you are like a piece of grass/straw
away from mom's heart,
where will you find happiness?

I did not win the bid on the doll bed! They wanted allot for the shipping, and I wasn't willing to pay more for her doll bed then I payed for her bed. I've got 7 tickets to China to pay for. I'm sure I'll find something else for her dolls!
I want everyone to pray for me. I am putting up the Christmas stuff with the kids. I packed the advent calendars, and put up the lights. I couldn't tell you how deeply sad I am right now! I want to make this a special time for my other children, but my heart is so NOT HERE! I can imagine how difficult it is for families who have loved ones away in war, or even my own parents who I know miss me allot! I have a great deal to be thankful for, and I realize Sarah does not miss Christmas. She has never had Christmas, so how could she miss it? It is all me! I feel almost cheated! We would have our TA by now, if, if ,if... I know it will come in due time, but right now I don't feel so Merry! I need some courage, and maybe some encouragement!

All I really want for Christmas is a family

I'm just playing with a new piece of software I got to make scrapbook pages. You know what? The pictures are not making me happy anymore! I have got to get to China soon! I don't want a picture...I want my baby!!!
